About the PA32 Turbo Saratoga

The Piper PA-32-301T Turbo Saratoga is the refined, retractable-gear evolution of the Cherokee Six. Known for its massive ‘station wagon’ interior, the Saratoga is a premier family cross-country machine. The Turbo variant specifically shines by maintaining its 300 hp Lycoming TIO-540 performance into the flight levels, making mountain crossings and high-altitude efficiency much more attainable than its naturally aspirated siblings.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Club Seating: Often equipped with a conference-style rear seating arrangement, providing unmatched passenger comfort for its class.
  • Cargo Loading: Features a large rear double door and a forward baggage compartment (between the engine and cockpit), making loading bulky items or balancing the CG exceptionally easy.
  • Turbocharged Utility: The TIO-540 engine ensures that ‘high/hot’ airports don’t compromise your safety margins or payload capacity.
  • Stable Platform: Its heavy feel and low-wing design make it an excellent, stable IFR platform for long-distance travel.

Trade-offs

  • Maintenance Complexity: As a complex, high-performance aircraft with a turbocharger and retractable gear, annual inspections and insurance premiums will be significantly higher than a fixed-gear Cherokee.
  • Fuel Burn: To see those 170+ knot speeds, expect a fuel flow in the 16-20 GPH range.
  • Landing Distance: While manageable, the Saratoga is a ‘heavy’ single and requires more attention to speed on short-field approaches compared to a Cessna 206.
