About the Mooney M20M Bravo
Type certificated 1989
Overview
The Mooney M20M Bravo is the turbocharged long-body Mooney, the flight-level cruiser of the family. Type-certificated in 1989 and first sold as the TLS (Turbo Lycoming Sabre), it was rebranded the Bravo in the mid-1990s after engine refinements. A 270-horsepower turbocharged Lycoming TIO-540 carries the stretched four-seat airframe to roughly 220 KTAS at 25,000 feet.
The Bravo sits above the normally aspirated Ovation and below the twin-turbo Acclaim. Its turbocharger buys altitude and weather-topping capability the Ovation cannot match, at the cost of a thirstier, more maintenance-intensive engine. Many Bravos carry TKS weeping-wing anti-ice and speed brakes, making them serious all-weather machines. Choose the M20M Bravo when you want to cruise in the flight levels above weather at better than 215 knots, and you accept the higher fuel burn and upkeep of a big turbocharged Lycoming to get there.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Flight-level speed. About 220 KTAS at 25,000 feet from the 270hp turbocharged TIO-540, with full power sustained into the flight levels.
- Weather-topping altitude. Turbocharging holds power to 25,000 feet, letting the Bravo climb over much of the weather a normally aspirated single must fly through.
- All-weather equipment. TKS weeping-wing anti-ice and speed brakes are common factory and aftermarket options.
- Long-body cabin. More rear-seat room than the mid-body Encore or short-body M20C.
Trade-offs
- Fuel thirsty. About 17.6 GPH at 75 percent power, well above the Encore’s 13.7 GPH from its smaller 220-horsepower Continental.
- Maintenance-intensive engine. The TIO-540 is known for higher upkeep, including top overhauls and turbo-system service; it is the costliest M20 piston to run after the Acclaim.
- Payload with ice protection. A full TKS system and full fuel cut into useful load.
