About the Mooney M20M Bravo
The Mooney M20M Bravo is a ‘Long Body’ turbocharged cruiser introduced to replace the M20K. It utilizes a powerful 270hp Lycoming TIO-540-AF1B engine. Originally launched as the ‘TLS’ (Turbo Lycoming Sabre), it was rebranded as the Bravo when oil-cooled exhaust valve guides became standard.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Speed & Power: A true 215+ knot cruiser in the flight levels.
- Cabin Comfort: The stretched fuselage provides significantly more legroom for rear passengers compared to the K-model.
- All-Weather Capability: Many Bravos are equipped with TKS ‘weeping wing’ anti-ice systems and speed brakes, making them serious IFR machines.
Trade-offs
- Fuel Thirsty: The large Lycoming engine burns significantly more fuel (17-18+ GPH) than the smaller Continental found in the Encore.
- Useful Load: Despite the higher gross weight, the heavy engine and optional TKS system can eat into the full-fuel payload.
