Tank-dry, where fuel runs out at catalogue's stored cruise burn.

Excludes reserves: range beyond the dashed circle requires a leaner cruise than what we store. Great-circle, still air, book cruise. Estimates only: always verify against the POH.

About the Pipistrel Panthera

Overview

The Pipistrel Panthera is a four-seat, all-composite cross-country single built by Pipistrel of Slovenia, now part of Textron eAviation. It pairs a 260-horsepower fuel-injected Lycoming IO-540 with retractable gear and a laminar-flow composite airframe to reach roughly 198 knots true on about 13 gallons of avgas an hour, unusually efficient for a four-seat single of that speed. A whole-airframe ballistic parachute and a glass cockpit are standard.

It is not yet type-certificated. After more than a decade in development the Panthera is still completing EASA CS-23 certification, and Pipistrel’s own data sheet states that all figures are provisional pending type approval and a final production configuration. In the US it is available on an experimental certificate rather than a standard one, in limited numbers. The specifications here follow Pipistrel’s 2023 official data sheet: treat the weights, fuel, and performance as the manufacturer’s current targets, not certified numbers.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Speed on little fuel. About 198 knots on roughly 13 gallons an hour is unusually efficient for a four-seat single; the laminar composite airframe and retractable gear are the reason.
  • Whole-airframe parachute, standard. A ballistic recovery system is fitted as standard, as on the Cirrus SR22.
  • Range with four aboard. Pipistrel quotes around 1,000 nautical miles with four aboard and IFR reserves.
  • Glass cockpit and composite cabin. A clean-sheet design with a purpose-built glass cockpit and a wide composite cabin.

Trade-offs

  • Not type-certificated. This is the defining caveat. The Panthera flies in the US on an experimental certificate, which limits financing, raises insurance, narrows the resale market, and means no certified maintenance and parts network stands behind it. A buyer takes on the risk of an aircraft still completing certification.
  • Provisional specifications. Pipistrel labels the published weights, fuel, and performance as provisional pending certification and a final configuration; the numbers can move before the aircraft is certified.
  • Complex and high-performance. Retractable gear, a constant-speed propeller, and 260 horsepower mean both a high-performance and a complex endorsement, with the insurance and currency expectations that go with them.
  • Limited production and support. Built in small numbers while certification is pending, so the owner network, parts pipeline, and shop familiarity are thin next to an established certified single.
