Overview
The Mooney M20R Ovation is the normally aspirated flagship of Mooney’s long-body M20 line, type-certificated in 1994 and built into the 2010s. It pairs the stretched four-seat airframe with a 280-horsepower Continental IO-550-G, returning roughly 190 KTAS on about 16 gallons per hour without the maintenance overhead of a turbocharger.
The Ovation sits between the economical short-body Mooneys and the turbocharged Bravo and Acclaim. It trades the flight-level speed of its turbo siblings for simpler systems, lower fuel burn, and the longest legs in the line on a tank of fuel. The model progressed through the original Ovation, the Ovation2, GX, and DX, the Ovation3, and the Ovation Ultra, with the later 310-horsepower variants adding speed and a larger tank. Choose the M20R Ovation when you want genuine 190-knot cross-country cruise and 1,000-plus-nautical-mile range from a normally aspirated single, and you would rather maintain a high-compression Continental than a turbocharged engine.

- Turbo-rivaling speed, no turbo. The 280hp IO-550-G delivers about 190 KTAS at 75 percent power while avoiding turbocharger overhauls, wastegate upkeep, and tight cylinder-head management.
- Long legs. The 89-gallon usable fuel load supports more than 1,000 nautical miles at economy cruise, a genuine coast-reaching single-tank range.
- Glass-panel availability. Later Ovation2 GX and Ovation3 airframes carry the Garmin G1000 suite, bringing integrated navigation and autopilot to the type.
- Speed per horsepower. The slick laminar-flow airframe is a Mooney signature, returning high cruise on modest power.
Trade-offs
- Not a short-field airplane. It needs respectable runway, particularly near the 3,368-pound gross weight, and floats readily if approach speed is not flown precisely.
- Snug cabin by class. Long-body legroom improves on earlier Mooneys but trails the cabin-class Beechcraft Bonanza.
- No flight levels. A 20,000-foot ceiling and falling true airspeeds up high mean the turbocharged Bravo and Acclaim own the altitudes; the Ovation is most at home in the mid-teens.
