About the Mooney M20K Encore

Overview

The Mooney M20K Encore is the final and most capable version of Mooney’s mid-body M20K line, a turbocharged four-seat single built in 1997 and 1998. It refines the earlier 231 and 252 with a 220-horsepower Continental TSIO-360-SB, a higher 3,130-pound gross weight, and the useful load the speed-focused 252 lacked. At 75 percent power in the flight levels the Encore trues about 198 knots on under 14 gallons an hour, only modestly behind the heavier Bravo while burning far less fuel.

The M20K type dates to 1978; the Encore is its 1997-98 culmination, sitting between the short-body M20C and the long-body Ovation and Bravo. Its 220-horsepower turbocharged Continental burns considerably less than the Bravo’s 270-horsepower Lycoming, and its mid-body cabin is roomier than the M20C but tighter than the long-bodies. Choose the M20K Encore when you want turbocharged flight-level speed and genuine useful load in an efficient package, and you prefer the lighter fuel burn of a 220-horsepower Continental to the brawnier Bravo.

  • Payload bump. The Encore’s higher 3,130-pound gross weight adds roughly 200 pounds of useful load over the 252, addressing the K-model’s traditional weakness.
  • Economical turbo. The 220hp Continental burns far less than the Bravo’s 270hp Lycoming for similar real-world speed.

Trade-offs

  • Mid-body cabin. Roomier than the M20C but tighter in the rear than the long-body Ovation, Bravo, and Acclaim.
  • Short production run. Built only in 1997 and 1998, so fewer come to the used market.
  • Turbocharged Continental upkeep. The turbocharged TSIO-360 asks for careful engine management and carries an 1,800-hour TBO.
