About the Legacy 500
Overview
The Embraer Legacy 500 is the mid-size business jet that introduced full digital fly-by-wire to its class, and the airframe on which the longer-range Praetor 600 was later built. Sharing the EMB-550 type certificate, it pairs a six-foot stand-up, flat-floor cabin with transcontinental range (about 3,125 nm) and a high-speed cruise near Mach 0.83 (Vmo 320 KIAS). Its Honeywell HTF7500E engines, sidestick controls, and active-turbulence-reduction flight laws reset expectations for the midsize segment when it entered service in 2014.
Key Features for GA Buyers
Fly-by-wire, midsize-first. The Legacy 500 was the first midsize jet with full fly-by-wire and sidestick controls, with active turbulence reduction that smooths the ride and eases pilot workload.
Stand-up flat-floor cabin. A true six-foot flat-floor cabin with a best-in-class 6,000 ft cabin altitude at FL450 puts it ahead of many larger jets for comfort on longer legs.
Transcontinental reach. Around 3,125 nm of range covers coast-to-coast US missions with a strong payload, and it shares the Praetor’s short-field manners.
Trade-offs
- Range versus the Praetor. The Legacy 500 is transcontinental, not intercontinental; buyers needing ocean-crossing legs step up to the Praetor 600, which adds fuel and full-rated thrust on the same airframe.
- Two-crew, program-maintained. Like its siblings it is a two-pilot, enrolled-engine-program jet; plan for crew and the Honeywell MSP hourly rate rather than a piston-style overhaul fund.
