About the Embraer Phenom 100
Type certificated 2008 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet
Overview
The Embraer Phenom 100 (EMB-500) is the entry-level very light jet Embraer certified in 2008, built clean-sheet for single-pilot owner-operators stepping up from high-performance pistons and turboprops. Two FADEC-controlled Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F-E turbofans, a 41,000 ft ceiling, and a 275 KIAS Vmo give it jet capability in a package one pilot can manage, and the “Oval Lite” cabin cross-section gives more head and shoulder room than rival VLJs like the Cessna Citation Mustang.
The Phenom 100 suits an owner-pilot whose trips run 600 to 900 nm and who wants jet speed and pressurisation without a second crew member, and it is the lowest-cost route into a twinjet that pairs a cabin with an enclosed, rigid-door lavatory. The brochure range is near 1,200 nm, but IFR reserves and headwinds make 800 to 900 nm the practical planning range; buyers who routinely need more reach or more seats step up to the larger Phenom 300. Against the Citation Mustang it wins on cabin volume and window area, and against a fast single-engine turboprop it trades some short-field flexibility for jet speed and the redundancy of a second engine.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Oval Lite cabin. A unique oval cross-section gives more head and shoulder room than comparable VLJs, larger windows than the Cessna Citation Mustang, and an enclosed, rigid-door lavatory uncommon at this size.
- Single-pilot certified. Approved for single-pilot operation behind the Embraer Prodigy flight deck (Garmin G1000, or G3000 on the EV and EX), intuitive for owner-pilots moving up from pistons.
- Low operating cost. A 41,000 ft ceiling and 275 KIAS Vmo on two fuel-sipping FADEC PW617F-E turbofans give it one of the lowest hourly operating costs of any twinjet.
Trade-offs
- Real-world range. The roughly 1,200 nm brochure figure becomes 800 to 900 nm with IFR reserves and headwinds; longer or fuller missions point to the Phenom 300.
- Runway access. It needs more runway than a comparable turboprop single, so the shortest or unimproved strips a King Air can use stay off the list.
