About the Cessna CitationJet CJ1

The Cessna 525 CitationJet (original ‘CJ’) is the definitive entry-level jet for the general aviation owner-operator. Mating a simplified version of the Citation II fuselage with a brand-new natural laminar flow wing and highly efficient Williams FJ44 engines, the 525 fixed the ‘Slowtation’ speed issue of earlier models while maintaining the docile short-field manners that made Citations famous.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Single-Pilot Certified: Designed from the outset for solo operations, it features a logical cockpit layout and simplified systems (like a simplified electrical bus) that reduce pilot workload.
  • Trailing-Link Landing Gear: The 525 introduced the robust trailing-link gear to the light Citation line, effectively curing the ‘bouncing’ landings common in the straight-leg Citation I.
  • Modern Wing Design: The NASA-developed laminar flow wing provides better lift-to-drag ratios, allowing for a much higher cruise speed (380+ kts) compared to the Citation I.
  • Low Operating Costs: The FJ44 engines are significantly more fuel-efficient and have longer TBO intervals than the older JT15Ds.

Trade-offs

  • Trenched Aisle: To keep the exterior profile small while allowing passengers to stand, the cabin has a dropped center aisle. This can make entering and exiting seats a bit of a ‘step-down’ maneuver.
  • Avionics Obsolescence: Early 525s often came with Honeywell SPZ-5000 avionics, which are increasingly expensive to maintain. Many owners opt for expensive Garmin GTN or G600 upgrades.
  • Payload-Range Tradeoff: With a full fuel load, the available payload is only about 530 lbs. This effectively makes the 525 a ‘two-person plus bags’ jet for missions over 1,000 nm.
