About the Cessna Citation M2
Type certificated 1992 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet
Overview
The Cessna Citation M2 (Model 525, ICAO C25M) is the high-performance evolution of the CitationJet line, sitting between the entry-level Mustang (now out of production) and the larger CJ family. In production from 2013 with progressive Gen2 (2022+) and Gen3 (2024+) interior and avionics refreshes, the M2 pairs Williams International FJ44-1AP-21 turbofans with the Garmin G3000 touchscreen flight deck, a single-pilot type rating, and the trailing-link gear that has defined the modern Citation owner-operator experience. The M2 occupies the slot between the Mustang’s VLJ profile and the CJ3 / CJ4 cabin and range, and is the entry point to current-production Cessna jets at the owner-operator price band.
For the GA buyer, the M2 is the current right answer for an owner-operator entering the Citation family. 404 KTAS cruise, 1,550 nm range, and 41,000 ft ceiling are honest mission numbers, and the G3000 touchscreen deck keeps solo workload low. The trade-off is acquisition cost: the M2 is a current-production type and resale prices reflect that. Operators who want a cheaper entry into Citation ownership are pushed back to the Mustang or a used CJ1 / CJ2 on the resale market.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Garmin G3000 touchscreen avionics. Touchscreen controllers, integrated checklists, and high-resolution displays make the G3000 a low-workload single-pilot flight deck.
- Direct climb to FL410. A strong initial climb rate (3,698 fpm) gets the M2 above weather and most jet traffic on cross-country missions.
- Trailing-link main gear. Forgives imperfect arrivals, a feature owners consistently praise, particularly for pilots transitioning from lighter aircraft.
- Current-production support. As an active Textron production line, parts, training pipeline, and avionics updates are fully supported. Gen2 and Gen3 refreshes add wireless charging, enhanced cabin lighting, and updated sound insulation.
Trade-offs
- Dropped centre aisle. The M2 retains the trench-style aisle of the CJ family. It provides standing headroom but makes cabin movement slightly less graceful than a flat-floor jet.
- Range against payload. Maximum 1,550 nm range is achieved at light load. A typical four-passenger mission with IFR reserves runs closer to 1,000 to 1,100 nm, requiring a stop on most US transcontinental trips.
- Acquisition cost. As a current-production type, the M2 commands a premium over legacy entry-level Citations; owner-operators cross-shop it against used CJ2 and CJ3 examples.
- Single-pilot in name only on longer missions. Though single-pilot certificated, owner-operator economics often benefit from a co-pilot or contract crewing on longer missions or weather days. Insurance and Part 91 / 135 considerations push toward two-pilot operation more often than the certification suggests.
