About the Hawker Beechcraft Premier IA

Type certificated 2001

Overview

The Raytheon Premier I broke from light-jet convention in 2001 with an all-carbon-composite fuselage wound on a computer-controlled filament machine, a structure that let Beech build a wider, rounder cabin than an aluminum airframe of the same weight would allow. Two Williams FJ44-2A turbofans, a Rockwell Collins Pro Line 21 glass flight deck, and single-pilot certification made it a genuine owner-flown jet, and it cruises at up to 454 knots, near the top of the entry-jet speed range.

The Premier I and the improved Premier IA share the same Model 390 type certificate; the IA added better brakes and avionics but no change to the airframe or engines. It suits an owner who wants an unusually wide cabin and strong cruise speed on 600-to-1,000 nm business legs and is willing to trade outright range and a modest baggage hold for them. A buyer who routinely needs four passengers, full fuel, and 1,200-plus nm will find the payload-range envelope tight, and should weigh a Citation CJ-series or a Phenom against it.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • All-composite fuselage: A carbon-fiber pressure vessel gives the Premier an unusually wide cabin for its weight, with a flat floor and headroom uncommon in an entry jet.
  • Single-pilot, 41,000 ft, 454 kt: Certified for single-pilot operation with a Pro Line 21 glass flight deck, it cruises fast and high for owner-flown missions.
  • Williams FJ44-2A power: Two 2,300 lbf turbofans on a proven family, with TAP-program overhaul intervals extendable to 5,000 hours.

Trade-offs

  • Payload versus range: Filling the cabin and the tanks is an either/or proposition; four-adult missions trade range down toward 1,000 nm.
  • Modest baggage, no in-flight access: The aft baggage hold is small for the cabin size and is not reachable in flight.
  • Out of production: Built 2001-2012 (292 airframes); the stretched Premier II / Hawker 200 was cancelled in the 2013 Hawker Beechcraft bankruptcy, so support tracks a finite fleet.

  • Cessna Citation CJ2 – The benchmark single-pilot light jet, with a deeper support network and better payload-range at similar speed. Compare
  • Cessna Citation Mustang – A slower, shorter-legged entry jet one tier down, with lower operating costs and strong residuals. Compare
  • Embraer Phenom 100 – The closest modern twinjet rival on price and mission, with a larger baggage hold. Compare
  • HondaJet HA-420 – A composite-fuselage single-pilot jet that succeeded the Premier’s market niche, faster and with an enclosed lavatory. Compare
