About the Cessna Citation Mustang
Overview
The Cessna Citation Mustang (Model 510) redefined the entry-level jet market as the first Very Light Jet (VLJ) from a major manufacturer to reach owner-operator hands at scale. In production from 2006 through 2017, the Mustang pairs FADEC-managed Pratt & Whitney PW615F turbofans with the Garmin G1000 avionics suite and a single-pilot type rating, offering pilots stepping up from high-performance pistons or turboprops a credible jet path with conventional systems and predictable operating economics. 470+ airframes were built before the M2 succeeded the Mustang in the Citation 525 series at the same price point.
For the GA buyer, the Mustang is the simplest jet on the resale market. FADEC removes hot-start risk, the G1000 cockpit is familiar to anyone with current piston time on Cirrus or G1000-equipped Cessna pistons, and Textron’s global support network keeps parts and qualified maintenance widely available. The trade-offs are real: cabin volume is modest, full-fuel payload is roughly two adults plus light bags, and the Mustang lacks the cruise speed and range of the slightly larger and more modern M2.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- FADEC simplicity. PW615F engines run on Full Authority Digital Engine Control. Hot starts are nearly impossible, and power management collapses to single-lever operation, removing one of the harder transitions for a pilot moving up from piston twins.
- Single-pilot certificated. The Mustang was designed from the cockpit out for solo IFR operation, with automated load shedding, integrated checklists, and clear system synoptics on the G1000 that match the workload reality of one pilot.
- Proven reliability and parts support. With a global Textron service network behind the type, parts and qualified maintenance are widely available compared to other VLJ programs that have come and gone.
- Trailing-link main gear. Forgives imperfect arrivals, and is one of the most owner-loved features of the type during transition training.
Trade-offs
- Cabin is cozy. Four passengers in club seating produces knee-knocking. The Mustang flies most comfortably as a 2+2 or three-passenger aircraft.
- Full-fuel payload constraint. The 1,150 nm max range comes at the cost of payload. With full fuel, useful load drops to roughly 600 lb, essentially two adults and light bags. Range and cabin load trade against each other on every mission.
- Lavatory is symbolic. A potty seat sits between cockpit and cabin behind a removable curtain. It exists; it is not a privacy solution.
- Speed and range below the M2. The Mustang cruises at 340 KIAS against the M2’s 380 KIAS, and the M2’s 1,500 nm range opens missions the Mustang cannot complete in one leg.
