About the Cessna Citation II/SP
Type certificated 1978
Overview
The Cessna Citation II/SP (Model 551) is the single-pilot-certificated version of the Model 550 Citation II, aerodynamically identical to the standard II but with maximum takeoff weight reduced to 12,500 lb so the type could be certificated under FAR Part 23. That weight cap is the whole point: it let owner-operators fly a true twin-turbofan light jet without a required second-in-command, opening the Citation line to a market that had been closed to it. Built on the same JT15D-4-powered airframe as the 550, the 551 trades a slice of payload-range for the crew-cost savings and scheduling freedom of legal single-pilot operation.
For the GA buyer, the II/SP is the owner-flown straight-wing Citation: the docile short-field manners and deep parts network of the Model 550, with the single-pilot certification that makes self-flown economics work, at a direct operating cost near 1,709 USD per hour. As across the JT15D family, engine overhaul reserves dominate the budget, so engine status at pre-buy carries outsized weight.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Legal single-pilot operation. The defining feature: FAR Part 23 certification at 12,500 lb MTOW removes the required second pilot, the primary draw for owner-operators and a direct crew-cost saving over the standard Model 550.
- Docile, short-field manners. The straight wing gives forgiving low-speed handling and lets a loaded 551 work runways under 3,000 ft, reaching regional fields swept-wing competitors clear only with a payload penalty.
- Deep Model 550 support. Sharing the airframe and JT15D-4 powerplant of the high-volume Model 550 means a broad parts, maintenance, and type-rated-crew network in the light-jet bracket.
- Genuine cabin. Up to nine passengers in a stand-up pressurised cabin with an aft lavatory, a real step up from the cabin-class turboprops owners typically move up from.
Trade-offs
- Reduced MTOW. The 12,500 lb single-pilot cap is 2,600 lb below the standard Model 550’s 15,100 lb. A full passenger load often forces a fuel trade, limiting the range achievable with the cabin full.
- JT15D overhaul economics. The JT15D-4 turbofans are reliable and well supported, but a full-overhaul event is a major capital cost; budget the reserve accordingly.
- Straight-wing block speed. Max cruise near 374 KTAS trails contemporary swept-wing light jets on longer legs, the enduring straight-wing trade for short-field access.
- Legacy avionics. Most 551s shipped with 1980s panels; budget an ADS-B and navigation upgrade or accept legacy equipment at pre-buy.
