About the Bombardier Learjet 45

The Learjet 45 (and its upgraded sibling, the 45XR) is a “super-light” business jet that bridges the gap between the light and mid-size categories. It was the first completely new Learjet design since the original Model 23, replacing the 35/36 series. It is favored for its reliability and speed, often outperforming competitors in time-to-climb and cruise.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Cabin Class: Uniquely spacious for its class, it features a flat-floor cabin (no trench) and a “double club” seating arrangement for 8 passengers that feels significantly larger than previous Learjets.
  • Performance: With a service ceiling of 51,000 ft, it can overfly most weather and traffic. The 45XR variant improves hot-and-high performance and time-to-climb significantly.
  • Modern Avionics: Standard equipment typically includes the Honeywell Primus 1000 suite, which, while older now, is robust and widely supported.

Trade-offs

  • Range vs. Payload: While the range is good (approx. 1,800 nm), filling the seats will reduce range capability. It is not a true coast-to-coast aircraft against headwinds.
  • Runway Performance: While better than some vintage jets, it still requires decent runway length (4,000+ ft) at MTOW, limiting access to very small GA airports compared to slower turboprops.
  • Maintenance: As a complex, out-of-production jet, parts and support remain good due to the large fleet size, but major inspections (like the 12-year/landings gear) can be expensive.
