About the Bombardier Learjet 35/36

The Learjet 35 and 36 (and their ‘A’ variants) are among the most iconic light business jets ever produced, known for their fighter-jet-like performance, high speeds, and long range. Originally manufactured by Gates Learjet and later Bombardier, the 35 series stretched the earlier Model 25 fuselage to accommodate the fuel-efficient Garrett TFE731 turbofan engines.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Exceptional Performance: With a maximum climb rate of over 4,500 fpm and a service ceiling of 45,000 ft, the LJ35 can climb above most weather and airline traffic.
  • Range & Speed: The Model 35 offers transcontinental range (approx. 2,100 nm), while the Model 36 sacrifices two passenger seats for a larger fuselage fuel tank, extending the range to nearly 2,900 nm.
  • Distinctive Tip Tanks: Standard tip tanks are a signature feature, housing fuel to support the aircraft’s long legs.

Trade-offs

  • Cabin Size: While longer than the Model 25, the cabin is still relatively tight (approx. 4‘9” width/height) compared to modern light jets.
  • Runway Requirements: Like many early Learjets, it has relatively high approach and landing speeds (Vref ~129 kts), requiring longer runways and attentive piloting compared to slower Citation models.
  • Maintenance: As a legacy aircraft, maintenance costs can be higher due to age, though parts availability remains reasonable given the large number produced.
