About the Vashon Ranger R7
Overview
The Vashon Ranger R7 is an American all-metal high-wing two-seat Special Light-Sport aircraft, built in Woodinville, Washington by a company founded by the founder of Dynon Avionics. That lineage shows in the panel: a full Dynon SkyView HDX glass suite with autopilot and ADS-B Out is standard, not an upgrade, on an airframe deliberately engineered to be a rugged, affordable, turnkey trainer and personal aircraft.
The Ranger is aimed at the flight school and the budget-minded owner who want a brand-new, factory-backed, low-maintenance aircraft rather than a used trainer or an imported composite. Its Continental O-200-D runs on avgas, its metal structure shrugs off hangar rash and ramp life, and its systems are deliberately conventional. A buyer chasing high cruise speed or long cross-country legs will find it modest; a school or owner who wants durable, honest, low-drama flying and training economy, backed by a US factory and a familiar Continental engine, will find it a rare turnkey new option.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Standard glass panel. Where rivals charge for avionics, the Ranger ships with a full Dynon SkyView HDX system including autopilot and 2020-compliant ADS-B Out as standard equipment.
- Rugged metal airframe. A sturdy all-metal structure and the proven Continental O-200-D suit it to flight-training use and light backcountry work.
- Wide cabin. At 46 inches across, the cabin gives more shoulder room than a Cessna 150 or 172, sized for two adults.
- Simple economics. A fuel burn near 5.5 gph and a modeled direct cost around $61 an hour keep operating economics honest for a training fleet or a private owner.
Trade-offs
- Limited payload at gross. Like most LSAs capped at 1,320 lb, full fuel (28 gallons) leaves modest cabin payload. Two heavy adults often means flying with reduced fuel.
- Modest speed. A 117-knot cruise prioritises stability and ruggedness over cross-country pace; it is not built for fast travel.
- Castering nosewheel. The free-castering nosewheel steers by differential braking, which takes adjustment for pilots coming from a steerable nosewheel.
