Overview
Vashon Aircraft is an American manufacturer in Woodinville, Washington, founded by John Torode, who also founded Dynon Avionics. It builds a single model, the Ranger R7, an affordable all-metal two-seat Special Light-Sport aircraft aimed at flight training and personal use. The company is active and in production.
Heritage
Vashon was created to apply Dynon’s avionics and manufacturing experience to a low-cost, turnkey Light-Sport aircraft, and the Ranger R7 reached the US market as an FAA-accepted S-LSA around 2018. The Dynon connection is central to the company’s approach: rather than treat glass avionics as an option, Vashon designed the Ranger around a full Dynon SkyView panel as standard equipment.
Design Signature
Vashon’s signature is durable simplicity at low cost: the Vashon Ranger R7 is a rugged all-metal high-wing two-seater on a proven Continental O-200-D, with a comprehensive Dynon SkyView glass panel, autopilot, and ADS-B Out included as standard rather than sold as upgrades. The design favors conventional systems and metal construction over composite complexity.
For Owners
The Ranger is in current production and sold factory-direct, with live pricing and a US manufacturing base. Its all-metal airframe and common Continental engine make maintenance straightforward and parts familiar, and the LSA condition-inspection regime keeps upkeep costs modest. For a buyer who wants a new, factory-backed, simply-maintained trainer or personal aircraft, Vashon offers a rare turnkey option.
