About the Beech 58 Baron

The Beechcraft Baron 58 is widely regarded as the ‘Gold Standard’ of light twin-engine aircraft. Introduced in 1969 as a ‘stretched’ version of the Baron 55, it features a 10-inch fuselage extension that allows for true six-place club seating and a large double aft door for easy passenger and cargo loading. Known for its crisp, ‘sports car’ handling—inherited from the Bonanza line—it remains a favorite for owner-pilots who value speed, redundant safety, and premium craftsmanship. Modern variants (G58) feature the Garmin G1000 NXi integrated flight deck.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Club Seating & Entry: The ‘Double Doors’ on the aft right fuselage make the Baron 58 significantly more accessible for passengers and freight than most competing light twins.
  • Performance: With two 300 hp Continental IO-550-C engines, it boasts a max cruise of over 200 knots and a robust climb rate even at higher weights.
  • Handling: It is often cited as the best-handling twin in its class, offering precise control harmony that makes it a stable and enjoyable IFR platform.
  • Supportability: With over 2,000 built and still in production (as the G58), parts and maintenance expertise are readily available at almost any GA service center.

Trade-offs

  • Full Fuel vs. Payload: While it has generous long-range tanks (194 gal), filling them often limits the cabin to just a pilot and one or two passengers. For a full-house mission, fuel must be significantly reduced.
  • Cabin Width: At 42 inches wide, the cabin is narrower than its primary competitor, the Piper Seneca, which can feel tight for larger passengers in the front seats.
  • Operating Costs: Maintaining two high-performance piston engines, along with the fuel burn (approx. 32 GPH total), makes the Baron a significantly more expensive asset to operate than a high-performance single.
