About the Stinson 108 Voyager
Type certificated 1948 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet
Overview
The Stinson 108 Voyager is a four-seat, high-wing, strut-braced taildragger built by the Stinson division of Consolidated Vultee from 1946 to 1950, and among the most-produced American lightplanes of the immediate postwar years. This record covers the 108-3, the final and most capable variant: a 165 hp Franklin 6A4-165-B3 engine, a 2,400 lb gross weight, 50 gallons of fuel, and an enlarged vertical fin. The earlier 108 and 108-1 used a 150 hp Franklin.
Built with a welded steel-tube fuselage and fabric covering, the Voyager pairs period character with genuine four-place utility. It carries more people and fuel than the two-seat classics of its era while competing directly with the postwar Cessna 170 and Piper Pacer.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Honest four-place utility. Useful load near 1,100 lb on the 108-3, enough for four adults and light bags.
- Forgiving manners. Docile handling and a wide gear make it an approachable entry into tailwheel flying.
- Strong parts support. Univair holds the type certificate and stocks more than 90 percent of major airframe components.
- Low cost to own. A DOC near $110/hr keeps the 108-3 economical to run for its four-place capability.
Trade-offs
- Franklin engine support. The Franklin is out of production; overhauls go through specialists and parts can be harder to source than for Lycoming or Continental engines.
- Crankcase cracking. Early 6A4 crankcases fall under a longstanding airworthiness directive (AD 51-15-02); confirm a later heavy case or current compliance at pre-buy.
- Fabric upkeep. A fabric-covered airframe needs eventual recovering, a periodic major expense to plan for.
- Tailwheel endorsement required. Conventional-gear handling demands current tailwheel proficiency.
