About the Maule MX-7
Type certificated 1984
Overview
The Maule MX-7-180 Star Rocket is the entry model of Maule’s current STOL taildragger line, a four-seat high-wing utility single built to order at Moultrie, Georgia. It pairs the family’s welded steel-tube and fabric airframe with a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 and a Hartzell constant-speed propeller, the lightest-powered of the current Maules. Short, simple, and rugged, it gets into and out of the small unimproved strips the marque was built for.
The MX-7-180 gives up the cruise speed and load of the 235 hp Maules for lower running costs and a gentler engine, while keeping the same short-field capability and field-repairable construction. Maule builds it to order in small numbers, so most buyers shop the used fleet. It suits the backcountry pilot who wants genuine STOL utility at the lowest operating cost in the line, and does not need the extra power of the M-7 or M-9.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Lowest running cost in the line. A DOC near $110/hr, below the 235 hp Maules, from the smaller 180 hp Lycoming O-360.
- Short-field STOL. Clears a 50 ft obstacle in about 600 ft on 180 hp, the family’s short-field manners in the entry model.
- Constant-speed propeller. A Hartzell constant-speed prop gives better takeoff and climb than a fixed-pitch entry trainer.
- Rugged, field-repairable structure. A welded steel-tube fuselage under fabric tolerates rough off-airport use and can be repaired in the field.
Trade-offs
- 180 hp, not 235. Lower cruise and climb and a lighter load than the 235 hp Maules; the trade for lower cost is performance.
- Fabric maintenance. The fabric-covered airframe needs hangar storage or more attentive upkeep than an all-metal aircraft.
- Tailwheel handling. Requires a tailwheel endorsement; the short taildragger needs active rudder on the ground.
- Built to order, thin new supply. Maule’s low, made-to-order output means new examples carry lead time; most buyers shop the used market.
