About the Maule M-7
Type certificated 1993
Overview
The Maule M-7-235B Super Rocket is a five-seat STOL utility taildragger, the stretched-cabin evolution of Maule’s steel-tube-and-fabric bush design, built to order at Moultrie, Georgia. A lengthened fuselage adds an optional third-row fifth seat and turns the rear cabin into a large cargo bay when flown as a four-seater. A 235 hp Lycoming O-540 on a Hartzell constant-speed propeller drives the short-field performance the type is known for, off oleo-strut tailwheel gear suited to soaking up rough strips.
The M-7-235B is the oleo-strut member of the 235 hp M-7 line; the later M-7-235C swaps to spring-aluminum main gear. Maule still builds the M-7 series to order in low volume, so a new example is a made-to-order proposition rather than an off-the-lot buy, and the used market is where most trade. It suits the backcountry or utility pilot who wants a load-hauling five-seat STOL taildragger with field-repairable simplicity, and who will trade cabin width and resale liquidity to get short-field capability and a big cabin in a simple, rugged package.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Five-seat cabin. The stretched fuselage adds an optional fifth seat, best suited to a child, and leaves a large cargo area when used as a four-seater.
- Short-field STOL. Clears a 50 ft obstacle in about 600 ft, opening mountain and backcountry strips a fixed-gear tourer cannot use.
- Reflex flap. A negative 7-degree flap setting reduces drag in cruise for the transit leg to and from the backcountry.
- Oleo-strut gear. The 235B’s oleo-strut main gear absorbs shock on uneven riverbeds and rocky strips.
- Rugged, field-repairable structure. A welded steel-tube fuselage under fabric tolerates rough off-airport use and can be repaired in the field.
Trade-offs
- Useful load with full fuel. With the optional 73-gallon tanks filled (about 438 lb of fuel), the payload for people and bags is much reduced despite the large cabin volume.
- Fabric maintenance. The fabric-covered airframe needs hangar storage or more attentive upkeep than an all-metal aircraft to resist UV degradation.
- Tailwheel and high-performance. Requires a tailwheel endorsement and, at 235 hp, a high-performance endorsement; the short-coupled taildragger needs active rudder on the ground.
- Built to order, thin new supply. Maule’s low, made-to-order output means new examples carry lead time; most buyers shop the used market.
