About the Embraer Praetor 600
Type certificated 2019 Source: manufacturer figure
Overview
The Praetor 600 is Embraer’s super-midsize flagship and the long-range development of the Legacy 500 airframe, certified in 2019. Its type certificate (FAA TC00062IB) records it as the EMB-550 MOD: the Legacy 500 with a weight increase, additional belly and ventral fuel, new winglets, and Pro Line Fusion avionics. Those changes turn a transcontinental midsize into a genuine ocean-crosser, 4,018 nm of range, enough for New York to London or Sao Paulo to Miami nonstop, at a high-speed cruise of 466 ktas (Mmo 0.83). It remains the only aircraft in its class with full fly-by-wire flight controls and active turbulence reduction.
For the buyer, the Praetor 600 is the case for paying up: it is the super-mid that reaches across oceans most rivals stop short of, on an airframe that still works runways like London City and Aspen. The real question is whether the mission needs the range, because an owner whose flying stays inside North America gets the same cabin and fly-by-wire for less in the Legacy 500. Set against the Bombardier Challenger 3500 on cabin and the Cessna Citation Longitude on range-and-runway, the Praetor wins on ride quality and short-field reach; what it asks in return is a higher acquisition price and the landing fees that follow the heavier MTOW.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Intercontinental range. 4,018 nm with four passengers crosses oceans that stop most super-mids, while holding a 466-ktas high-speed cruise.
- Fly-by-wire ride quality. Sidestick fly-by-wire with active turbulence reduction smooths the ride in rough air and trims pilot workload on long legs, in a six-foot flat-floor cabin.
- Short-field reach. Strong runway performance opens restrictive airports like London City and Aspen that many intercontinental jets cannot use.
Trade-offs
- Pay-up for the range. It commands a clear premium over the Legacy 500, and the higher MTOW raises landing and handling fees at some airports.
- Flight-department economics. Plan on two pilots and the Honeywell MSP hourly engine-program rate; this is a crewed airplane, not an owner-flown one.
