Overview
The Embraer Legacy 500 is the mid-size business jet that brought full digital fly-by-wire to its class, and the airframe Embraer later stretched into the longer-range Praetor 600. Certified in 2014 under the EMB-550 type certificate (FAA TC00062IB), it pairs a six-foot stand-up, flat-floor cabin with transcontinental range of about 3,125 nm and a high-speed cruise near Mach 0.82 (Vmo 320 KIAS, Mmo 0.83). Its Honeywell HTF7500E engines, sidestick flight controls, and active-turbulence-reduction flight laws reset what the midsize segment offered when it entered service.
For most buyers the Legacy 500 is the affordable route into fly-by-wire and a genuine stand-up cabin. It fits an owner whose flying is mostly transcontinental and who wants ride quality and cabin room a conventional midsize can’t give, without paying to carry ocean-crossing fuel. When the mission grows to intercontinental legs, the Praetor 600 is the same airframe with the range added; the Legacy 500 is the airplane for everyone whose flying stays inside North America, and on the used market it now trades well under its replacement cost.

- Fly-by-wire, midsize-first. The Legacy 500 was the first midsize jet with full fly-by-wire and sidestick controls, and its active turbulence reduction smooths the ride and trims pilot workload.
- Stand-up flat-floor cabin. A true six-foot flat-floor cabin with a 6,000 ft cabin altitude at FL450 puts it ahead of many larger jets for comfort on longer legs.
- Transcontinental reach. About 3,125 nm covers coast-to-coast US missions with a full club of passengers, and the airframe keeps the short-field manners the Praetor later inherited.
Trade-offs
- Range stops at transcontinental. Buyers who routinely cross oceans step up to the Praetor 600, which adds belly fuel and full-rated thrust on the identical airframe.
- Crewed, program-billed economics. It is a two-pilot airplane enrolled on the Honeywell MSP engine program; budget hourly for crew and program billing rather than building a piston-style overhaul fund.
