About the Van's RV-14

Overview

The Van’s RV-14 is a two-seat, side-by-side, low-wing Experimental Amateur-Built kit aircraft from Van’s Aircraft of Aurora, Oregon, introduced in 2012 as a larger, more powerful evolution of the RV-7. Powered by a 210 hp fuel-injected Lycoming IO-390 (with a 215 hp IO-390-EXP119 option), it cruises about 170 knots true, climbs at roughly 1,800 fpm, and is fully aerobatic with a +6/-3 g envelope, pairing genuine cross-country speed with aerobatic capability. It is one of Van’s most refined kits, engineered with pre-punched, match-drilled parts to shorten and de-risk the build.

The RV-14 sits at the top of Van’s two-seat line, above the light-sport RV-12 and below the four-seat RV-10. Buyers cross-shop it against other fast kit two-seaters and, on the certified side, high-performance sport singles, where it undercuts factory aircraft on cost while trading away type-certificated status. Choose the Van’s RV-14 when you want a fast, aerobatic, two-seat cross-country airplane you build and maintain yourself, value Van’s refined kit and deep support network, and do not need four seats.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Fast and aerobatic. The 210 hp IO-390 delivers about 170 KTAS cruise and a full +6/-3 g aerobatic envelope, an uncommon mix of cross-country speed and aerobatic capability.
  • Van’s most refined kit. Pre-punched, match-drilled parts and detailed plans make the RV-14 one of the quicker and more accessible builds in the RV line.
  • Roomy two-seat cabin. A wider cabin than the earlier RV-7 makes space for larger pilots and side-by-side comfort on long legs.
  • Lycoming IO-390 power. A fuel-injected, 2,000-hour-TBO Lycoming with broad parts support, with the option of the 215 hp IO-390-EXP119.

Trade-offs

  • Two seats only. Builders who need to carry a family step up to the four-seat RV-10.
  • Not sport-pilot eligible. A clean stall of 62 KIAS sits above the MOSAIC 59-KCAS sport-pilot limit, so the RV-14 requires at least a private pilot certificate.
  • Amateur-built responsibility. Expect a build of well over a thousand hours, or a pre-built example whose workmanship a pre-buy inspection must establish, with the experimental operating and insurance profile.
  • A high-performance handful. 210 hp, a constant-speed propeller, and an aerobatic airframe reward proficiency, and insurers expect transition training.
