About the Tecnam P2010
Type certificated 2014
Overview
The Tecnam P2010 is a modern four-seat high-wing single that pairs a carbon-fiber fuselage with metal wings, powered by the 180-horsepower Lycoming IO-360-M1A burning avgas through a fixed-pitch propeller. Type-certificated in 2014 (EASA.A.576; FAA A00066CE, 2015), it offers three-door cabin access, a Garmin G1000 NXi suite, and an IFR-capable cross-country platform aimed at personal owners and flight schools alike.
A current-production, glass-panel four-seater on simple avgas, it undercuts the diesel and 215-hp variants on purchase price. It cross-shops directly against the Cessna 172 Skyhawk and Piper Archer, trading their aluminum legacy for a composite fuselage and a more modern cabin. Step up to the Tecnam P2010 TDI for Jet-A economy and an 18,000-foot ceiling, or to the 215-hp MkII (Lycoming IO-390) for more climb and useful load.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Modern composite-and-metal airframe. A carbon-fiber fuselage with metal wings gives a roomy, corrosion-resistant cabin newer than the legacy aluminum trainers it competes with.
- Three-door access. Two forward doors plus a rear door ease cabin loading for passengers and baggage.
- Garmin glass, IFR-capable. Typically delivered with a Garmin G1000 NXi suite, making it a credible IFR trainer and personal cross-country aircraft.
- Simple avgas operation. The fixed-pitch Lycoming IO-360 keeps operation and maintenance familiar and inexpensive relative to the FADEC diesel.
Trade-offs
- Modest cruise on 180 hp. A fixed-pitch 180-hp P2010 cruises around 134 KTAS, competitive with a Skyhawk but slower than the 215-hp MkII or a retractable.
- Borderline MOSAIC. The clean stall sits at 59 KCAS, right at the sport-pilot gate; a KCAS verification can flip the verdict, so sport-pilot eligibility is not confirmed.
- 12,000-foot ceiling. Normally aspirated, it lacks the turbocharged TDI’s high-altitude reach.
- Premium over legacy trainers. A current-production composite single costs more to buy than a used Skyhawk or Archer.
