About the Gulfstream G550
Type certificated 2003 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet
Overview
The Gulfstream G550 is an ultra-long-range heavy jet, and for two decades it set the standard for the segment. Type-certificated in 2003 as the GV-SP, a refinement of the record-setting GV, it pairs a 6,750 nm range with the PlaneView flight deck (Honeywell Primus Epic) and was among the first business jets to certify an Enhanced Vision System. Its two Rolls-Royce BR710 engines and 51,000 ft ceiling let it fly city pairs like New York to Tokyo or Los Angeles to Sydney nonstop. Gulfstream ended G550 production in 2021 as the fly-by-wire G650 and G700 took over the top of the range, so today’s G550 is a used-market proposition.
On the used market the G550 sells on range and support network at a fraction of current G650 acquisition cost. The offset is a slightly slower cruise, an older flight deck, and the running costs of a 91,000 lb airplane. Against the Gulfstream IV-SP it is the longer-legged successor in the same large-Gulfstream line; against a large-cabin twin like the Dassault Falcon 2000LXS it trades efficiency and field access for outright range.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Global reach: 6,750 nm at Mach 0.80 ties nonstop city pairs such as New York to Tokyo and London to Buenos Aires.
- Enhanced-vision pioneer: among the first business jets to standardise an Enhanced Vision System with a head-up display, paired with the PlaneView (Honeywell Primus Epic) flight deck.
- Dispatch reliability: a strong in-service reliability record and a global Gulfstream support network built up over the GV and G550 production run.
Trade-offs
- Operating budget: variable costs near $5,900 per hour and heavy annual fixed costs put the G550 firmly in flagship-ownership territory.
- Size and access: a 93.5 ft wingspan and 91,000 lb ramp weight demand substantial hangar space and keep it off smaller municipal fields.
- Superseded flagship: production ended in 2021, so the G550 is a used buy against the newer G650 and G700, a factor in residual value and the latest cabin technology.
