About the Grumman American AA5B
Overview
The Tiger is the definitive version of the AA-5. By combining the aerodynamic cleanups of the Cheetah with a 180 hp Lycoming O-360, Grumman created a fixed-gear aircraft that can outrun many retractable-gear competitors.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- High Performance (Non-Complex): Offers 140-knot cruise speeds without the maintenance headache or insurance premiums of retractable gear.
- Climb Performance: The extra 30 hp compared to the Cheetah makes it a much safer and more capable short-field and high-altitude performer.
- True 4-Seater: The 200 lb gross weight increase allows for a much more practical payload.
Trade-offs
- Purchase Price: Tigers command a significant premium over Travelers and Cheetahs—often $20k-$40k more for the same airframe age.
- Fuel Burn: Burns roughly 10-11 GPH compared to the 8-9 GPH of the 150 hp variants.
