Grumman American
Aircraft Manufacturer
Grumman American was a division of Grumman Aerospace Corporation that produced business aircraft, including the Gulfstream I turboprop and the Gulfstream II jet. In the 1950s, Grumman began manufacturing Gulfstream aircraft, which were operated by various companies, private individuals, and government agencies, including NASA. In the early 1970s, Grumman acquired majority interest in American Aviation, a line of very light aircraft, and relabeled its planes as “Grumman-American.” However, in 1978, Grumman sold its American Aviation division, including the Gulfstream business, to American Jet Industries. American Jet Industries adopted the Gulfstream name and eventually sold the company to General Dynamics in 1999, making Gulfstream a wholly owned subsidiary.
