About the Grumman American AA5A

Overview

The Cheetah is the result of Roy LoPresti’s aerodynamic refinements to the Traveler. It is roughly 6-7 knots faster than the Traveler using the same 150 hp engine, making it one of the most efficient 150 hp four-seaters ever built.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Improved Handling: Features a larger elevator which fixes the pitch sensitivity issues found in the Traveler.
  • Range: Optional 52-gallon fuel tanks significantly extend cross-country capabilities.
  • Speed/Efficiency: Outruns a Cessna 172 while burning similar fuel.

Trade-offs

  • Hot Weather Performance: Can be a ‘dog’ in high density altitude situations due to the 150 hp engine and increased gross weight if heavily loaded.
  • Useful Load: With full long-range fuel, it becomes a two-person aircraft.
