About the Cessna Citation VII

Overview

The Cessna Citation VII (Model 650) is the most powerful and final development of the 650 series, built on the same swept-wing, T-tail airframe as the Citation III and VI but fitted with uprated Honeywell TFE731-4R-2S turbofans (4,080 lbf each, against the III/VI’s 3,650 lbf TFE731-3B). Certificated under its own section of FAA type certificate A9NM in January 1992, the VII keeps the family’s 51,000 ft ceiling while adding the thrust needed for markedly better hot-and-high and climb performance. It superseded the VI in production and is the most sought-after of the three.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Best performance of the 650 series. The TFE731-4R engines give the VII shorter takeoff rolls and a higher climb rate, making it the strongest performer out of high, hot, or short-runway airports such as Aspen or Toluca.
  • 51,000 ft ceiling with digital flight control. Like the III and VI it cruises in the high-40s/low-50s flight levels, typically with the Honeywell SPZ-8000 integrated flight control system and EFIS.
  • Stand-up midsize cabin. The Model 650 cabin carries dropped-aisle headroom and an enclosed aft lavatory, with improved soundproofing over the III and VI.

Trade-offs

  • Higher fuel burn than the III/VI. The more powerful -4R engines burn roughly 285 gph in cruise versus about 241 gph for the III/VI’s -3B, so trip fuel and direct cost run above the earlier 650s.
  • TFE731-4R maintenance economics. Midsize-jet hot-section and overhaul reserves apply; budget engine reserve well above light-jet levels.
  • Two-pilot operation. The Model 650 is certificated for a minimum crew of two and is not single-pilot eligible.
  • Legacy avionics. Even the newest airframes are now decades old; panel upgrades for current airspace compliance are a common six-figure investment.
