About the Socata TB-10 Tobago
Type certificated 1979 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet
Overview
The Socata TB-10 Tobago is a four/five-seat, fixed-gear, low-wing single built in France by Socata (now part of Daher), in production from 1979 into the early 2000s. It pairs a 180 hp carbureted Lycoming O-360-A1AD and a Hartzell constant-speed propeller with the wide TB-family cabin, and it earned a reputation as a wide-cabin touring and instrument trainer with a car-like interior and excellent visibility.
The Tobago sits in the middle of Socata’s piston TB line, above the 160 hp fixed-pitch TB-9 Tampico and below the 250 hp retractable Socata TB-20 Trinidad. It cross-shops against the Piper Archer II and the Diamond DA40, offering more cabin width than most four-seat trainers at the cost of a thinner US parts network. Choose the TB-10 when a wide, comfortable cabin and a stable IFR-training platform matter more than outright speed, and fixed-gear simplicity is preferred over the retractable Trinidad.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Wide, comfortable cabin. The TB-10 shares the broad TB-family fuselage and large doors, giving more shoulder room than most four-seat trainers, with the sports-car-styled interior Socata was known for.
- 180 hp with a constant-speed prop. The carbureted Lycoming O-360-A1AD and Hartzell constant-speed propeller deliver an honest 127-knot cruise and a 2,000-hour TBO.
- Fixed-gear simplicity. No retraction system keeps maintenance and insurance below the retractable TB-20, and the handling suits primary and instrument training.
- Day and night IFR. Approved for day and night IFR with stable handling, the Tobago covers cross-country instruction and private touring on the same airframe.
Trade-offs
- Speed. At about 127 knots the Tobago trades cruise for cabin width and simplicity; a retractable on the same power will cruise faster.
- Parts and support. As a French-built type with a smaller US fleet, some airframe-specific parts can be slower and costlier to source than for a comparable Cessna or Piper. Identify a shop familiar with the type before purchase.
- Payload with full fuel. With four seats and 54 gallons of usable fuel, a full-fuel TB-10 is realistically a two-to-three-person airplane. Check the weight-and-balance of the specific aircraft before planning four adults and bags.
- Modest climb and ceiling. The naturally aspirated O-360 gives roughly 790 fpm initial climb and a service ceiling near 13,000 ft, adequate for the mission but not a high-density-altitude performer.
