About the Air Tractor AT-502B

Type certificated 1992 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet

Overview

The Air Tractor AT-502B is the single-seat workhorse of the AT-500 series and the best-selling aircraft Air Tractor builds, a 500-gallon agricultural turboprop on a 750-shp Pratt & Whitney PT6A-34AG. Type-certificated in 1992 and still in production, it is the airframe most working aerial applicators picture when they think of an Air Tractor: a rugged, single-mission sprayer sized for the bulk of commercial application contracts. It shares its airframe with the tandem AT-503 but drops the second seat for a pure one-pilot working cockpit.

For an application operator, the AT-502B is the default mid-size choice: enough hopper and power for most row-crop and pasture work, without the weight, fuel burn and cost of the 600- and 800-series. It is the rung most operators settle on, with the AT-402 below it for smaller acreage and the AT-602 above when the daily workload outgrows 500 gallons. Its ubiquity is itself a feature: parts, trained mechanics, financing and resale are all deeper for the 502B than for any other tractor in the line.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • 500-gallon hopper. The mid-size load that covers the bulk of commercial application contracts, the reason the 502B is the line’s volume seller.
  • 750-shp PT6A-34AG. A well-supported turbine with a published overhaul price and a deep service network, the opposite of the rare-engine risk on older tractors.
  • Single-mission working cockpit. One seat, full spray controls and the high, aft seating that gives the swath and obstacle visibility ag work demands.
  • Deepest support in the line. As the best-selling Air Tractor, it carries the widest parts, maintenance and resale base of any model in the family.

Trade-offs

  • Restricted category. Agricultural and conservation work only; no for-hire passenger transport or congested-area overflight.
  • Single seat. A pure applicator with no room for an instructor or observer, which is the tandem 503’s niche.
  • Mid-size productivity ceiling. At 500 gallons it makes more loads per section than a 600- or 800-series on very large acreage.
  • Tailwheel and high power. Like every tractor it demands tailwheel proficiency and rewards experience in the loaded, low-level application regime.
