About the Fairchild Dornier 328JET

Type certificated 1999 Source: FAA Type Certificate Data Sheet

Overview

The Fairchild Dornier 328JET is a thirty-plus-seat regional jet created by re-engining the Dornier 328 turboprop with Pratt & Whitney Canada PW306B turbofans. The airframe, cabin, and short-field character carry over from the turboprop, but the jet cruises faster and higher, to about 405 knots and FL350. The result is an unusually wide-cabin regional jet: six-foot-plus stand-up headroom and three-abreast seating in a class where narrow tubes are the norm. In corporate “Envoy” trim it offers a large-cabin experience at regional-jet acquisition cost.

For the buyer, the 328JET pairs a roomy cabin and genuine short-field access with the running costs of a thirsty small jet. It left production with Fairchild Dornier’s 2002 collapse, so it is a used-market aircraft with the parts-support caveats that follow from an inactive manufacturer.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Wide stand-up cabin: Six-foot-plus headroom and three-abreast seating give it a large-cabin feel well beyond most light and mid-size jets of its era.
  • Short-field access: It operates from runways shorter than most jets of its size require, widening the list of usable regional airports.
  • Steep-approach capability: Built for demanding European regional operations, it is approved for steep approaches into constrained fields.
  • Glass flight deck: The Honeywell Primus 2000 avionics suite provides integrated FMS and displays.

Trade-offs

  • Fuel burn: The converted turboprop airframe is not optimised for jet cruise, so fuel burn is high for the speed, around 320 GPH; hourly cost reflects it.
  • Out of production: With the manufacturer gone since 2002, some parts (notably landing-gear components) can mean longer maintenance downtime.
  • Cruise speed: About 405 kt is faster than the turboprop but slower than purpose-built regional jets such as the Embraer ERJ or CRJ.
  • Small fleet: A limited production run narrows the pool of type-experienced shops and spares.
