About the Beech B19 Musketeer
Overview
The Beechcraft Sport (B19) is the more economical, two-to-four seat sibling of the Sundowner. Originally designed as a trainer to compete with the Cessna 150/152 and Piper Cherokee 140, it offers the same wide-cabin luxury and robust build quality that Beechcraft is known for, but with a more fuel-efficient 150-hp Lycoming engine.
Key Features for GA Buyers
- Superior Training Platform. Features the same trailing-link landing gear as larger Beechcraft models, making it very forgiving for students and low-time pilots.
- Cabin Width. Offers a 44-inch wide cabin, which is significantly more spacious than a Cessna 150/152 or even many four-seat competitors.
- Dual Entry Doors. A rare and highly valued feature in a light trainer, allowing both the instructor and student (or pilot and passenger) easy access.
- Aerobatic Capability. Some models are certified in the Aerobatic Category for limited maneuvers, making it a versatile platform for upset recovery training.
Trade-offs
- Payload. While it has four seats, it is effectively a two-adult aircraft if you intend to carry significant fuel. The 150-hp engine struggles with heavy loads.
- Speed. Cruising at ~110 knots, it is not a cross-country speedster; it’s best suited for local flights, training, and short hops.
- Parts Availability. While many components are shared with the Musketeer line, some Beech-specific parts can be more expensive than equivalent Cessna or Piper components.
