About the Mooney M20F

Type certificated 1965

Overview

The Mooney M20F (the Executive) is the stretched-fuselage, 200-horsepower member of Mooney’s M20 line, type-certificated in 1965 and built from 1966. It takes the M20E’s fuel-injected Lycoming IO-360 and adds about ten inches of cabin along with more fuel, giving up little speed for room and range. It trues around 155 knots on roughly 11 gallons an hour.

The M20F is the long-cabin answer among the early Mooneys, more comfortable and longer-legged than the M20E while keeping the same economical 200-horsepower engine. Its airframe is the one Roy LoPresti later refined into the M20J 201. Choose the M20F when you want vintage-Mooney speed and economy with more cabin room and fuel than the short-body M20E, and you do not need the 201’s extra aerodynamic polish or the turbocharged models’ altitude.

Key Features for GA Buyers

  • Room and range. A stretched cabin and 64 gallons of fuel give the F more rear-seat space and longer legs than the M20E on the same engine.
  • 200hp economy. Around 155 KTAS on about 11 GPH from the fuel-injected Lycoming IO-360.
  • Basis for the M20J 201. The M20F airframe is what Roy LoPresti refined aerodynamically into the M20J 201.
  • Lower-cost retractable entry. One of the lower-cost routes into a fast certified four-seat retractable.

Trade-offs

  • Vintage age. 1960s and 1970s airframes need careful pre-buy attention to the integral wet wings, landing gear, and corrosion.
  • No turbo, modest ceiling. Normally aspirated performance falls off in the high teens.
  • Speed control. Like all Mooneys, the clean airframe floats if approach speed is not flown precisely.
